Industry anecdotes suggest that it is 40% faster and 50% cheaper to develop a novel drug in China than in the West. We’ve heard this quoted enough times that we decided it was time to dig into Trialtrove to get a clearer understanding of what this really looks like. Which stages of the trial process show the biggest gap between China and the rest of the world? And, ultimately, how can sponsors take advantage of these savings to bring new therapies to patients more quickly and cost-effectively?
We’ve crunched the numbers and I’ll be joining Norstella’s Daniel Chancellor and Citeline’s Hsingmei Wu for a webinar on September 24th to talk about our findings and what they mean for the industry. You can register for the webinar here.
What the data show
Here are a few of the findings we'll discuss:
- Over half of Phase I single-country oncology studies are run in China
- Chinese Phase I oncology sites enroll patients 1.6x faster per site than their US counterparts, and complete enrollment sooner
- China's 882 participating sites absorbed 13,730 site activations between 2016 and 2025 - 15.6 per site, against 5.5 in the US
- The productivity advantage holds at Phase III, where China also leads on enrollment rate and duration across a much larger site footprint
These differences reflect structural advantages in how China's clinical infrastructure operates.
What we'll cover
The webinar will look at the regulatory shifts that enabled China's rise as a trial execution hub, alongside a detailed look at where its strengths are concentrated by development stage. We'll also address the strategic questions that matter most for companies weighing a China-focused development approach. There’s lots to discuss and I’m really looking forward to sharing our findings – I hope you’re able to join us.
Register here — the webinar runs on September 24 at 10am EST.
