Following another challenging year, the C+D team is thrilled to announce that the foremost professionals in community pharmacy will once more have the opportunity to gather together as we commemorate excellence and progress in the sector.

There is truly a wealth of reasons to celebrate. Our established categories, such as Community Pharmacist of the Year and Independent Pharmacy of the Year, remain intact. Additionally, the Trainee Pharmacist of the Year category makes a reappearance to acknowledge outstanding individuals at the beginning of their pharmacy careers who set themselves apart using drive and ingenuity.

We are extremely excited to announce that the new category of Unsung Hero makes an entrance into the awards for 2024 and replaces the Above and Beyond awards. THE C+D AWARDS CATEGORIES 2024

Replacing the ever-popular Above and Beyond awards, this year C+D wants to hear from you about the unsung heroes in your profession.

This is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate a pharmacist or pharmacy staff member who has gone the extra mile for their patients and the sector as a whole. 

Share with us a time when you or your team exceeded expectations to assist patients, perhaps through life-saving interventions, charitable endeavours, or other remarkable efforts. The stories in each category will be subject to voting by C+D readers.

Unlike other C+D Awards, this is not an evaluation of an individual's entire career or a comprehensive project. Instead, it focuses on a specific event that allowed you or a colleague to stand out. The awards welcome submissions from any team, pharmacist, or pharmacy staff member with a noteworthy story from 2023. Although this category revolves around a singular experience, feel free to provide some background context and explain the repercussions of your story.

For instance, if your entry involves a patient intervention that went beyond standard of care, you may want to offer background information about your relationship with the patient and provide an update on their current well-being. However, if your narrative tends to focus more broadly on your or your pharmacy's achievements, it's advised to consider entering one of the other 12 C+D Awards categories. If the story you wish to submit involves a colleague rather than yourself, you are permitted to enter on their behalf. Ensure you have verified all the details with them and be aware that they will receive a complimentary ticket to the awards ceremony if they make the shortlist.

Great pharmacy businesses never stand still either on the ground or online. They continue to innovate, evolve and raise the bar for competitors. And it’s not just about throwing cash at problems – it’s about the creative ideas that genuinely move your business forward. So what have you done to innovate? Have you gone greener? Have you led the way on the ground? Or have you taken to Facebook to organise a health campaign, used Twitter to promote your brand or launched a new website? Whatever you have done the judges will want to see how your business and, most importantly, your customers have benefited.

In no more than 300 words per question, please answer the following:

  • How did you identify the need for your innovation and how did it meet this need?
  • What impact has your innovation had on your pharmacy business and/or your pharmacy team(s)?

This award aims to shine a light on vital work that is being done by pharmacy teams, organisations and individuals to challenge inequality in the sector. Tell us about an innovative training course your pharmacy has run to educate staff about diversity, or an initiative you’ve implemented to promote more diversity in your team. However you’ve promoted equality and diversity, tell us your story.

In no more than 300 words per question, please answer the following:

  • What have you/your team/your workplace done to deserve this award and why?
  • What impact has this had on your team and/or the wider company (if applicable)?
  • What tangible benefits have come out of your initiative?

 

WHO CAN ENTER

Any UK-based individual or team working for or on behalf of a community pharmacy business. 

Whether you provide public health services such as an anticoagulation clinic or palliative care, or clinical services such as smoking cessation, diabetes screening or flu vaccinations, it goes without saying that your service has to be well executed.

Every independent pharmacy has to balance the demands of delivering a modern, patient-centred health service with offering a customer experience that rivals the big high-street retailers – an even harder challenge in today’s harsh funding environment.

Jay joined the Pharmacists’ Defence Association as Director of Pharmacy in May 2024. The PDA is the largest pharmacy membership organisation bringing together over 38,000 members from across all areas of practice. It is a not-for-profit defence association and the only independent trade union exclusively for pharmacists in the UK. As part of the senior leadership team, Jay helps lead the PDA to look after the individual and collective interests of employed and self-employed pharmacists. Previously Jay held senior executive and company director roles within multiple and independent pharmacy groups. He won the C&D Community Pharmacist of the Year award in 2015 and numerous other sector-based awards during his time with Whitworth Chemists. He served on the Board of Management of the National Pharmacy Association as Vice Chair and was a Board Member for six years. He was also the Chair for Community Pharmacy Tees Valley for three terms and is a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. Jay has a keen interest in social justice and international humanitarian law and was awarded his LL.M. by studying this field whilst completing his master’s degree in law.
Stephanie Bancroft

Stephanie is a community pharmacist and lead for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in north-west London. She organises regular educational events that support pharmacists’ CPD for revalidation and has led several award-winning projects for community pharmacists, with the aim of improving patient outcomes. Stephanie is deputy chair of the Parkinson’s Disease Specialist Pharmacy Network and a member of Brent and Harrow Local Pharmaceutical Committee.

Chris has experience of working across many sectors of pharmacy including academia, community, hospital and prison pharmacy. He now mainly works in primary care as a pharmacist independent prescriber and as a Senior pharmacist supporting the training and development of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Liz has worked across various pharmacy sectors and is a leader in driving the pharmacy technician profession forward. Liz is the Senior Professional Advisor Pharmacy Technician Practice at NHS England and Improvement. She has led many workforce developments to ensure the skills and expertise of pharmacy technicians are recognised. Liz is the immediate Past President of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK and is in her final year of an Executive Masters in Business Administration at the University of Greenwich.
Leyla Hannbeck
Chief Executive – Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies
 
Leyla joined the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies as CEO in September 2019, working with the board to set the vision for the organisation and influence the direction of travel for the sector. Prior to this, she worked for the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) as director of pharmacy and chief pharmacist and as medicines safety officer for independent pharmacies with fewer than 50 branches. Leyla holds a degree in pharmacy, post graduate degrees in pharmacy practice, pharmacology and toxicology and an MBA. Her career started in Sweden, before moving to the UK in 2004 and working her way up from branch manager to senior management positions within community pharmacy
Yasmin Haq
Community and Practice Pharmacist
 
Yasmine is a Clinical PCN Pharmacist working across the North East of England. She splits her time over her practices, working in community and training the new generation of pharmacists through the PCPA. She graduated in 2019 at the University of Sunderland receiving the Jemma O'Sullivan award for her determination, care and compassion shown throughout her degree. Within her time as a Pre-Registration and Provisional Pharmacist she won Pre-Reg of the year for both C+D Awards 2020 and The Pharmacy Business Awards 2020. Her scope of experience started 11 years ago starting as a pharmacy assistant and since then has developed countless qualities to encourage and support many around her. She has since been one of our Women in Pharmacy Advisors, featuring on the podcast series 'a coffee with' and shared her story at The Pharmacy Show 2021 live.
Mike Holden
Associate Director at Pharmacy Complete
 
Michael is a pharmacist and Associate Director of Pharmacy Complete, a consultancy working with pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry to understand the opportunities and enablers in the current health landscape. Having run his own community pharmacy group, in 2005 he became the Chief Officer of Hampshire & IOW LPC where many pharmacy service innovations have their roots including the Healthy Living Pharmacy initiative. In 2011 he became the Chief Executive of the National Pharmacy Association. Michael is a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Royal Society for Public Health and continues to advocate and support an expanded role for the profession.
Nick Kaye
Chair, NPA
 
Nick, is a third generation community pharmacist, he graduated from Bradford University in 1998, and trained as a pre-registration student in a family run community pharmacy and at St. James University Hospital Leeds. Since qualifying, he has worked for an independent pharmacy, as a locum and prescribing advisory for the Newquay doctors group. Nick was the Superintendent Pharmacist of Nick Kaye's Pharmacy in Newquay in Cornwall a role he took on in 2011 and finished in 2017. Whilst in that role the pharmacy won several awards including, C+D finalist 2013, Pharmacy Business award winner Entrepreneur 2012 and Alphega pharmacy of the year 2013. Nick is an ex-Partner of Veor Group of general practices and was also involved in the Key Note Speaker's Panel at the Pharmacy Show 2013.
Michael Keen

Michael was chief executive of Kingston and Richmond Local Pharmaceutical Committee (LPC). Previous roles include chief executive of Kent Local Pharmaceutical Committee; national access manager, professional liaison for Pfizer; operations manager at The Company Chemists’ Association; and superintendent pharmacist at Superdrug. In the past, Michael has also been chairman of Kingston and Richmond LPC and director at The Institute of Pharmacy Management International.
Seb Miles

Seb is an experienced pharmacy finance professional, heading up RxBridge and is on the board of it’s parent company, Tradebridge. With a background in Asset Brand Lending and sector level expertise earned at Pharmacy Partners, Centric Commercial Finance and Shawbrook Bank, his 15 years experience funding into the sector has helped drive RxBridge’s growth to become the largest provider of discretionary working capital facilities for independent pharmacy businesses in the UK.
Prof Mahendra G Patel Obe
Pharmacy and Inclusion and Diversity Lead Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences – University of Oxford
 
Professor Mahendra G Patel OBE is an eminent pharmacist and academic of national and international profile honouring professorial roles in the UK, Malaysia and USA. He has served as national board member and as Treasurer for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for many years. He is also member of the Teaching Faculty for Bioethics at UNESCO. Mahendra has several national and international awards to his credit, notably around supporting evidence-based practice, health promotion and health education, and improving health and health inequalities within ethnic minority and underserved communities. He became one of the first to be awarded a Fellowship from NICE, and through pharmacy he received the prestigious Royal Pharmaceutical Society President’s Charter Award, and also became the first to be appointed International Fellow of the Indian Pharmaceutical Society. Mahendra is one of the UK trial leads at the University of Oxford in the world’s largest and fastest recruiting clinical trials in primary care, with the PRINCIPLE and PANORAMIC trials. In the Queen's New Year's Honours 2022, Mahendra was recognised for his outstanding contribution and work in pharmacy and was awarded an OBE.
Eoghan O'Brien
Community Pharmacist at Bannside Pharmacy
 
Eoghan is the Elected Integrated Care Partnership (ICP) Pharmacist for Antrim/Ballymena since 2013. ICPs, are playing a key role in how health and social care services in Northern Ireland are being transformed and are helping to change the way care is delivered. He is a casual lecturer on the MPharm course at Ulster University & Ulster Chemist Association Pharmacy Pre-registration training programme on Enhanced Services, Complementary Medicine and Health & Wellbeing. Eoghan is a second-generation independent contractor, having taken over Bannside Pharmacy from his late father Colm in the County Antrim town of Portglenone in 1993.
Aled Roberts
Associate Director Contractor Engagement, Community Pharmacy Wales
 
Aled is a Community Pharmacist Independent Prescriber, who graduated from Cardiff in 2008, and completed his Independent Prescribing qualification in 2021. Aled fits patient facing work – including delivery of the Wales Community Pharmacy Independent Prescribing Service - around his main role as Associate Director of Contractor Engagement at Community Pharmacy Wales. In this role he provides support for the Welsh community pharmacy network in delivering all elements of the CPCF, as well as leading national work for CPW on Collaborative working, the Choose Pharmacy digital clinical platform and Electronic Prescribing.
Sukhy Somal
Black Country ICB - Head of Community Pharmacy Clinical Services
 
Sukhy is currently working in the NHS to support the Black Country deliver more Clinical Services in Community Pharmacies across the Black Country. She has a vast amount of experience working as a Professional Services Development Manager, an Area Manager and setting up and owning one of the busiest Independent pharmacies in the Country, PharmaCare Pharmacy. This has helped her to secure three Chemist & Druggist Award wins: The Manager of the Year 2020, Team of the Year 2021 and Independent Pharmacy of the Year 2022. She has a wealth of experience in supporting care homes, large organisations, pharmacies and delivering various accredited training programmes.

Mital is an experienced leader in the community pharmacy sector. He is passionate about innovation and improving patient experience and is an advocate for community pharmacy. Having been a judge for the past three years he is inspired by the fantastic stories and innovations that occur across the Pharmacy landscape and is delighted to see the profession progressing forward. Mital has been previously nominated as the Community Pharmacist of the Year at the C&D Awards 2018 and was part of the winning Team of the Year award in the 2020 C&D Awards ceremony.

Mital's current role focuses specifically on Digital Innovation, identifying new products, services and partnerships to provide consistent growth opportunities and choices for our patients and customers at Well.
Nonyelum Anigbo
President, British Pharmaceutical Students’ Association
 
Nonyelum is the current President of the British Pharmaceutical Students Association (BPSA) 2023/24, and a fourth year pharmacy student at Keele University. As BPSA President, she is dedicated to ensuring the thoughts and best interests of pharmacy students and foundation trainees are well represented in the pharmacy profession. Nonyelum is passionate about work and strives to make sure diversity and inclusion are at the heart of all BPSA does, and that these values are reflected across the pharmacy profession.
Nicola Stockmann
President, Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK
 
Nicola Stockmann is the President of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK). She has previously held roles as Vice-President of APTUK and the APTUK Hampshire branch chair person. She has represented APTUK and the pharmacy technician profession internationally and to give evidence at the Health and Social Care committee. Her APTUK voluntary role is in addition to her role at Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust (HHFT) as the Pharmacy Operations Manager & Dispensaries manager, service lead.

She has been a qualified Pharmacy Technician for 11 years and has previously worked in community pharmacy, clinical trials, medicines optimisation and as a Medicines Safety Officer.
